Birch Green keepsakes

Residents at Birch Green Care Home had a creative afternoon decorating colourful rocks.

Using stencils of animals and a variety of bright paints, the ladies and gentlemen created beautifully painted rocks.

Once the rocks were dry, staff helped to varnish them, so they could be used as keepsakes.

The art and design sessions at Birch Green are a popular choice amongst residents.

Croxteth Park 2018 Memory Walk

A team from Birch Green Care Home joined 3,000 people at the Croxteth Memory Walk last week to raise vital funds for research against dementia.

The walk was hosted by Nicole Barber-Lane, better known as Myra McQueen from Hollyoaks, and attended by a range of public figures.

The kind-hearted team of nine started the sponsored walk at 11am and walked 7.5km, reaching the finish line with just enough time before the rain started.

Walking amongst the sea of blue t-shirts were Angie, Gill, Ali, Jamie, Sian, Jennie and her daughter Becky.

The group put in so much effort on the day for a charity which is close to everyone’s hearts throughout Birch Green – We are all really proud of you, well done to you all.

Toby’s Helping Hands lunch

A group of residents and staff from Birch Green Care Home headed to the local Toby Carvery for lunch recently.

The monthly Helping Hands lunch is a great opportunity for people to gather for a meal out and have a lovely catch up.

Everyone tucked in to a delicious lunch whilst local singer George sang some old-time favourites and then later in the afternoon our ladies and gentlemen enjoyed singing along to the music and dancing the afternoon away.

During the afternoon a raffle was drawn, and Birch Green had two lucky winners - Irene, who chose a pair of cushions which now look lovely in her room, and John who picked a selection of chocolates, or as he puts it, his sweet tooth chose the chocolates for him.

Everyone had a great time at the helping hands lunch and residents are looking forward to the next one soon.

‘Out to sea’ with Birch Green

Residents at Birch Green Care Home in Skelmersdale spent time celebrating the recent National Maritime Day.

The occasion started off with a fun, sea-themed quiz and over the course of the day residents spent time sampling seafaring food.

Specialties included muscles, cockles, prawns and mackerel, washed down with a rum and coke, and despite not everyone having ‘fishy’ taste buds, cockles and prawns were the firm favourite of the day.

Time was also spent on an activity involving painting pebbles in bright colours and once they had dried, varnishing them so they will always look pristine.

Donna Briggs, Managing Director is going to hide one of the pebbles in her local park with the hashtag #OssyRocks – Hopefully when someone finds it they will post a photo on their Facebook page for us all to see.

History lessons for Birch Green

A group of Skelmersdale veterans visited Birch Green Care Home to give a talk on the history of the First and Second World Wars.

The veterans brought with them a number of objects relating to this period of history, and gave a talk covering fascinating topics including how different the sign-up process and life in the army is now compared to the early 1930s.

We all got the chance to see and touch things from the war that many had either not seen before, or not seen for a long time.

One resident, Edna, shared stories of her father, Harry Fishwick, and husband John Gregory, accompanied by her photographs. The veterans were pleased to listen to her stories and even took copies of the photos to use in future talks.

Thanks for stopping by!
