Home Safari visits Birch Green

Birch Green was visited not once but twice in June by Home Safari, an organisation that works alongside the NHS providing animal-assisted therapy sessions to individuals within care environments.

Lisa and Karen, animal handlers from Home Safari who tailor sessions to individuals, brought in a variety of animals for residents to interact with including a snake, a skunk, a rabbit, a meerkat, a bearded dragon and a tortoise.

Home Safari aim to improve health & well being with assisted or independent movement, increase self-esteem, increase communication and interactions with others, decrease anxiety or loneliness, and much more.

Residents learned about where the animals originated from and enjoyed discussing their eating and sleeping habits too.

After an education session, residents and staff had the opportunity to interact with some of the animals – there were some very brave residents who handled the snake.

We are looking forward to our next session with Home Safari.

Care home staff praised by inspectors

Inspectors have praised the quality of staff and the training they receive at Birch Green Care Home in Skelmersdale.

In awarding the home a ‘good’ rating, inspectors from the industry’s watchdog, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) made particular note of the commitment of staff.

All areas of the home, part of the Springhill Care Group, were examined, from the safety of the service to how it is led, with inspectors looking at everything from how medicines are stored to the quality of day-to-day activities.

To celebrate the good news, staff, residents and family members gathered at Birch Green for a party, toasting the inspection results.

The report notes that “people were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible.”

The report went on to say: “Staff members were very knowledgeable about those in their care. We found the staff team to be well trained, through induction programmes, training modules, regular supervision and annual appraisals.”

The relationship between staff and residents was also highlighted: “We saw staff consistently demonstrating caring skills towards those who lived at the home. The staff team clearly knew people well and had an excellent rapport with them.”

Donna Briggs, Managing Director of the Springhill Care Group, said the home had worked hard to achieve the rating.

She explained: “Our staff at Birch Green work tirelessly to ensure the quality of care delivered for residents is first class, and we are delighted that this has been recognised by the CQC.

“We are particularly pleased to note that the CQC highlighted the training and development we deliver to staff. Our staff are the secret to our success, and we aim to support them in developing their chosen career pathways with relevant support from a dedicated team.

“It’s great to see that the relationship between staff and residents has been praised in this way, as we really do think of ourselves as one big family.”

A right Royal celebration at Birch Green

Birch Green pulled out all the stops for its celebration of the wedding of the year.

After setting up gazebos in the sun, activities coordinator Gill was accompanied by her little helpers James, Taylor, Charlie and Amber as she prepared for the party.

Tables were decorated and there was plenty of lovely food and drink on hand as we watched the big event.

There was plenty of discussion between us all about Meghan’s lovely dress, and how dapper Prince Harry looked. Everyone agreed it was a beautiful wedding, and while the sun shone in the Birch Green Garden we ended the afternoon with a good old sing-song.

Congratulations to the happy couple from all at Birch Green Care Home.

Fun in the sun at Birch Green

Our ladies and gentlemen have been taking full advantage of the glorious sun shine recently.

We’ve been enjoying lounging around in our garden listening to some of our favourite songs.

We’re all hoping the sun shine’s here to stay, so we’re stocking up on our choc ice and ice lolly supplies in anticipation.

Roll on summer....

Baking day at Birch Green

Every week Birch Green Care Home holds a baking day which fills our corridors with delicious aromas.

This week our ladies treated us to some mixed fruit and cherry scones which we loved preparing, baking and of course eating.
