Birch Green was visited not once but twice in June by Home Safari, an organisation that works alongside the NHS providing animal-assisted therapy sessions to individuals within care environments.
Lisa and Karen, animal handlers from Home Safari who tailor sessions to individuals, brought in a variety of animals for residents to interact with including a snake, a skunk, a rabbit, a meerkat, a bearded dragon and a tortoise.
Home Safari aim to improve health & well being with assisted or independent movement, increase self-esteem, increase communication and interactions with others, decrease anxiety or loneliness, and much more.
Residents learned about where the animals originated from and enjoyed discussing their eating and sleeping habits too.
After an education session, residents and staff had the opportunity to interact with some of the animals – there were some very brave residents who handled the snake.
We are looking forward to our next session with Home Safari.
