With around 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia, it’s becoming more and more important to increase awareness on how the condition affects people’s lives.
Recently, we welcomed local Dementia Friends Champion Joe Sherville back to Birch Green, where he delivered an information session to help people understand more about dementia, and how they can help those affected.
The Dementia Friends initiative is run by the Alzheimer’s Society, to help change people’s perceptions, and there are over one million Dementia Friends across England and Wales who work to promote dementia friendly communities.
Dementia Friends Champions like Joe help to increase awareness by going out into the community and teaching people about dementia, and providing the opportunity for people to sign up to become Dementia Friends, so they can put their new understanding into action to help others.
This time, seven staff Birch Green staff members signed up, which means there are now 15 in total at Birch Green.
At Birch Green, we have specialist services and facilities to support those affected by dementia.
Our residents can enjoy the benefits of a whole range of activities designed to stimulate positive memories, such as sensory gardens, arts and craft afternoons and holistic treatments.
